How to Increase Vocal Range

Many people reach their naturally highest and lowest notes and decide to give up, thinking they cannot get any higher or lower. But there are ways to train your body increase vocal range. Singing is all about practicing and working on it. You do not learn to ride a bicycle the moment you climb on it, nor should you expect that to happen. Singing is no different.

Here is the process of increasing your vocal range:

Breathe properly

The breathing technique most singers use with amazing results is “diaphragmatic breathing.” What does breathing have to do with how to increase vocal range? The answer is simple. Using abdominal breathing will give you a base upon which to build your singing. From there, you can ensure your singing doesn’t fall apart later. This kind of breathing trains your abdominal muscles to handle the strength you will use when singing. This way, when exert yourself beyond your comfort zone to go higher or lower in your register, you guard against straining and hurting your throat muscles.

Relax and warm up

To increase your vocal range you will need to work hard, but in a relaxed way. Your body should be ready to start. Make sure you are relaxed by shaking your whole body and drawing circles with your shoulders and head to stretch them and release any tension. Make sure your body is ready to start singing by warming up.  Humming and lip trills are a good way to get started.

Start singing

To start increasing your vocal range, work within your current register first, and build slowly but surely from there. Find the notes that are comfortable for you and start singing scales from your low notes to the higher ones. These comfortable scales can also be considered a part of your warm up. They will get you ready to pursue more.

Go higher

Now that you know where your stand in your vocal register, you are ready to improve. Once you reach your highest comfortable note, using the “diaphragmatic breathing” and taking advantage of how your “instrument” is ready to work after warm up and relaxation, try to go further. If it hurts, stop and check your breathing again, something is not right. Don’t force anything. If any pain or discomfort persists, never jeopardize your vocal health. Seek further advice from a voice coach or try a singing program like Singing Success or Singorama. If you feel like you can keep going, however, reach your highest point. Every time you practice you should sound better and will be able to go higher.

Go lower

Go down the notes doing scales to up to the lowest note you’ve reached so far, and try getting further down too. Only going for higher notes can bring adverse results, so always make sure you keep a balance between high and low notes to really increase your vocal range!
