How to Sing High Notes

Just started singing and can’t get to that really high part of your favorite song?
Well, here we’ll give you this Beginners guide to Singing high notes

  • Pay attention to your body! Making music requires an instrument and someone to perform it. In singing, the instrument and the performer depend completely on

one body. Singing high notes specifically requires more strength and more air, so you have to be sure your body is up to it. For that, on the first place make sure your muscles are relaxed. You’ll need your mouth to help you project sounds the right way by opening as much as you need it, To get it ready you can open it up in a big “O” shape and move it while open in order to make sure it’s relaxed and will do so when you need it to. As for the rest of the body, make circles with your shoulders before starting your exercises, move your whole body and give it a good shake! If you’re loose when shaking, you’re ready to start.
  • Warm up. Actually this is more about paying attention to your body, but requires a special attention for you should not try to reach high notes at all if you haven’t done this. Why? Well, without a proper warm up, singing high notes is like running full speed for twenty minutes without stretching. You´ll most likely get hurt. Warming up is as easy as it is essential. As we said before in this Beginners guide to Singing high notes, high notes require more strength than “easier” notes for your register, so before working on them you have to be sure your muscles are warm and stretched and ready to work in the way they should!
  • Use your belly for breathing! Well, not exactly your belly, it’s your diaphragm you’ll be using. This “diaphragmatic breathing” is the best way of getting the strength for singing to come from the right place, and also to handle the air so that you’ll be able to maintain your high notes as long as you need to. Diaphragmatic breathing is essential for knowing How to sing high notes. If you don’t use this breathing you’ll probably use your throat muscles for singing, and guess what… strangely enough that’s not what those muscles are for! If you use your throat muscles for singing you’ll get tired really fast and end up hurting your voice. This is why, especially for singing high notes, it’s essential to use diaphragm breathing.
  • Feel the sound in your head… literally. Using your diaphragm to push the air out as you’ve just learnt, feel the air go straight from your belly (making your vocal chords vibrate on its way) to your head. To do that, imagine the sound pushing against the top of your head, your chords are just the way through. You shouldn’t feel your throat working but your belly, and you will also be able to feel the strength of the air coming out tickle you inside your head.
  • Don’t go on if you feel sore. If you’ve understood the previous tips on this Beginners guide to Singing high notes, you are ready to start trying to get better on your high notes. This is a delicate matter, though, for you may get hurt if you push yourself before you’ve fully understood the concepts and are able to apply them. Even if you know exactly how to work them you should always be alert not to force your throat. So, if it hurts when practicing, give it a break, and either find what’s failing and causing the soreness or find more complete and personalized tips before you go on.
