Vocal Warm Up Essentials
Ready to start singing?
Let's do it then! But you won't be using song lyrics for a little while.
Before that, it's important that you understand the importance of Vocal warm up.
The first step to start singing is vocal warm up. Why? Singing involves your body and muscles, and all muscles should be prepared before they start working.
When singing, you use your vocal chords and diaphragm. The diaphragm needs to be ready to push the air up to your vocal chords, while your vocal chords have to be warm and able to stretch in order to vibrate with that air and then… voilá! Sound!
Just as you need to stretch before running in order to improve your performance and avoid getting hurt, you need to do your vocal warm up before singing. You will be amazed by the difference this few exercises make, and how much better it feels to sing after doing them, and so will the people listening!
Apart from this “muscular matters” singing shares with most sports and all kinds of activities that involve using your body and needing to get the best out of it, there's also a more intellectual thing to it.
A good singer gets involved in what he or she is singing in order to be able to really share the meaning and depth of the songs being performed.
You might want to share feelings in the lyrics, body sensations, a willingness to dance, deep emotions… a huge range of options, and succeeding in this depends on you really being into what you're doing.

Vocal warm ups are also essential for that matter. Not only do they get your muscles ready to stretch and work, but also make you focus on what you are about to do. You'll notice a huge difference in performance between just jumping on stage and singing a song by heart and really stopping, getting focused in what you are about to do, and in the meantime preparing your body for action. Not to mention the fact that without a proper warm up you might hurt your chords, will surely get more tired after a few songs, and will have to make a whole lot more effort singing properly.
There are many techniques used for warming up; the most used ones are humming, lip rolls and scale singing.
- Humming is done with a “hmmm” sound, and with closed but loose lips, you should feel them vibrate as the sound comes out. You can then do some variations that will make you feel vibrations on your nose area, this is good for acknowledging your “resonators”.
- For lip rolls , keeping your lips closed but always relaxed (your mouth too, no teeth quenching!) this time, you will use a “brrrrrrrrrbrbrbrbr” sound;
- Finally, for scale singing you'll go up and down through different specific notes with your voice to get it ready for action!
